Startup Weekend - Hong Kong : November 14-16
On the weekend of November 14-16, TLD Registry will be sponsoring Startup Weekend in Hong Kong for the second year running. This weekend event in Hong Kong is especially exciting because many Chinese tech startups will also be in attendance. Startup Weekend is known as a global movement for entrepreneurs who are learning the fundamentals on how to build a company and successfully launch their ventures. TLD Registry will gain the opportunity to come together to share ideas, join workshops, form relationships, and start companies with people from cities all around the world.
TLD Registry believes that it is essential to support startups so that they become enabled to expand the developments and business opportunities within the tech community. During this event, we will connect with these startups to encourage them and their partners to register a Dot Chinese Online and or Dot Chinese Websitedomain name as a solid investment for their successful futures.
Internet Days Stockholm : November 24-25
This years’ Internet Days in Stockholm will feature a keynote speech from TLD Registry’s CEO Arto Isokoski! For the 14th consecutive year, the conference will be held at the Waterfront Congress Centre on November 24th and 25th. Organized by.SE (The Internet Infrastructure Foundation), an independent organization responsible for Sweden’s ccTLD and Internet development in Sweden, the conference will be shifted into a different approach this year. .SE hopes to create more of a forum for Internet influencers to come together and share ideas. We cannot wait to hear Arto’s speech and wish him the best of luck.
New and Notable
Jin Wang Appointed GM of TLD Registry’s new Beijing Headquarters
During TLD Registry’s grand opening ceremony of the new HQ in Beijing on October 24th, we were proud to announce the appointment of our new China General Manager, Jin Wang. As General Manager of our China operations, Jin is responsible for managing registrar, media, government, and all stakeholder relations in China. The opening ceremony was made memorable by the attendees such as Mikko Puustinen, the Minister Commercial of Embassy of Finland, Yu Yang, the Service Delivery Center of the State Council Office for Public Sector Reform's Counsellor, and Chen Ting, the China Network Information Center's Deputy Director for Registrar Administration and International Business. Also in attendance were TLD Registry China registrars. Chinese media covered the entire event that was filled with speeches, gifts, and concluded with a grandiose celebratory dinner.
This new office will represent TLD Registry’s commitment to correspond closely with it’s China constituents and community. The HQ, located in China’s “Silicon Valley”, known as Zhongguancun, will be the perfect opportunity to directly be involved in China’s technology community. The TLD Registry team is also excited to start developing a close and long future with Jin Wang as he leads the Beijing office and welcome him to the family.
Chinese Domain Name Ambassador Website Page
A new addition to the TLD Registry’s website, the Chinese Domain Ambassador webpage, will surely grab the attention of the next generation of passionate Chinese domain investors. The Chinese Domain Ambassador Program was completely organized and orchestrated by the TLD Registry team as a grassroots program, designed as an available resource for enthusiastic young Chinese domain name investors. Ambassadors gain special access to TLD Registry’s expertise in the Chinese domain name industry. Through this program they will be able to reach out to other young domainers to expand the community for Chinese domain name investing. TLD Registry is excited to expand this program and support young investors in their domain endeavors.

Chinese Speaking People Demographics
Chinese domain names are relevant to people living in every country of the world. 23% of the world’s population are Chinese. They consume Chinese products, services, read the Chinese web and newspapers, interact with other Chinese people, etc. This population of Chinese people is not limited to the borders within Mainland China. Chinatowns around the world from regions in North America to parts of Asia, Australia, Europe, and Africa are densely populated with ethnic Chinese people. This calculates to 50 million people outside of China who would benefit from Chinese IDNs such as TLD Registry’s Dot Chinese Online (.在线) and Dot Chinese Website (.中文网).
CEO, Arto Isokoski Interview in IoN Magazine
Seen the latest version of IoN Magazine? You might have noticed a feature interview with TLD Registry’s own CEO, Arto Isokoski. The second issue of the magazine, premiered at ICANN 51 in Los Angeles. Questions were centered around Chinese IDNs and its influence in the Chinese market. Arto discusses the important value of Chinese domains for the immense Chinese speaking community. He states, “We see our IDNs as being of service to Chinese language groups all over the world- and that’s what we’ve seen in our registrations”. The interview also delves into the linguistic and cultural relevance of Dot Chinese Online (.在线) and Dot Chinese Website (.中文网) and how the introduction of Chinese IDNs is meant to support universal acceptance for Chinese Internet users.
TLD Registry Chinese Domain Name Roadtrip 2014 - Austin, Phoenix, LA : October 9-12
During the week preceding ICANN 51 on the west coast of the States in sunny Los Angeles, the TLD Registry team jumped into a decked out fully branded Dot Chinese Online and Dot Chinese Website van, properly named “Chinese Domainmobile”, and traveled through the southwest United States. The first stop started in Austin, Texas. A dinner at the world’s best BBQ place, The Salt Lick, was a must. TLD Registry was happily joined by friends from DomainNameWire, Radix Registry, RIGHToftheDOT, including the company of Monte Cahn and Morgan Linton. From Austin to Phoenix on the southwest adventure, TLD Registry was busy with team bonding and workshops. Finally landing in Los Angeles ,where there roadtrip concluded and ICANN would kickoff.
ICANN 51 Beverly Hills Chin Chin Lunch Party : October 12
Located not far from the ICANN 51 venue, TLD Registry in partnership with friends at.CLUB Domains, hosted its “Chinafornia” lunch party at one of Los Angeles most renowned Chinese restaurants, Chin Chin on Sunday October 12. Among the VIP guest list were industry leaders, influencers, investors, partners, media, family and friends. The lunch was accompanied by a lion dance performance and a traditional Chinese music ensemble, including a professional Chinese calligrapher. At the end of the party, guests were presented with a framed Chinese name and TLD Registry t-shirt. TLD Registry would like to thank everyone who attended and had a blast! If you did not have the chance the attend, we hope you join us at the next ICANN meeting.
ICANN 51 Los Angeles : October 12-16
Hosted at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza from October 12-16 was the 51st installment of the ICANN conference in Los Angeles. TLD Registry had an opportunity to drive around, and park in front of the conference hotel, with the one and only “Domainmobile,” as a moving billboard for Dot Chinese Online and Dot Chinese Website. Several ICANN participants praised TLD Registry’s creativity by posting the Domainmobile to social media. This is a wonderful acknowledgement of our hard-working marketing team. ICANN provided a source for TLD Registry to meet with current clients, sustain and continue to build business relationships, and meeting with other potential business partners for possible future endeavors. Hosting more than 2,000 participants, ICANN was key in brand marketing, as TLD Registry made sure to give away cool new t-shirt’s to all those who attended. Full of meetings, networking and parties, ICANN was a great success for TLD Registry’s promotional and business goals. For now, another mark can be checked in the “Attended ICANN” category, until next year’s ICANN 52 in Singapore.

Chinese Character of the Week
Etymology: “网” is a pictograph directly related to its meaning. The meaning is so obvious that one does not need to know much about the Chinese language to guess its meaning. The incomplete enclosure represents the outline of a trap: one way in, no way out. The two crosses inside stand for ropes are woven together to keep the prey inside. Thus, the character means a “web”, for fishing and hunting. Nowadays, it is also used for metaphorical webs, such as the World Wide Web or the Internet.
