Nearly 23% of humanity is Chinese. See where they live.
There are approximately 50 million ethnic Chinese people living outside of China’s mainland, which itself is home to nearly 1.4 billion Chinese. Ethnic Chinese people comprise 3.7% of the world’s population beyond China’s borders. Most of these consumers read, write and speak Chinese. Densely populated Chinese communities outside of China, oftentimes referred to as “Chinatowns,” are a good way of demonstrating the size of the global Chinese consumer base. Using fully-Chinese domain names, such as Dot Chinese Online (.在线) and Dot Chinese Website (.中文网), is a powerful and inexpensive method of reaching this vast demographic group of consumers. Chinese language domain names can be an exceptionally powerful and cost-effective way of promoting your product, service or message in Chinese language communities. Chinese language domain names are culturally relevant, linguistically correct, and commercially attractive. They can substantially enhance your SEO and positively influence an audience of global consumers. In the current “expansion of the internet” new gTLD program, in which several thousand new top-level domains (TLDs) are coming on line, the world’s biggest-selling* non-English new gTLD domain names are in Dot Chinese Online (.在线) and Dot Chinese Website (.中文网). Click to download a high-resolution PDF of TLD Registry's Where do Chinese people live" Infographic. Chinatowns in North America New York City contains the largest ethnic Chinese population outside of Asia, totaling 682,265 individuals, per the 2010 United States Census. There are at least nine different Chinatown communities in New York State alone. The Chinatown in San Francisco, California, is the oldest Chinatown in North America and also one of the largest Chinese communities outside of Asia. Two other cities in California have significant Chinese populations: Los Angeles with more than 66,782 ethnic Chinese and San Jose with 63,434 ethnic Chinese. Chicago’s Chinatown is on the Windy City’s South Side and is home to more than 70,000 Chinese people. Honolulu is home to more than 40,000 Chinese, and its Chinatown Historic District is one of the oldest Chinatowns in the United States. Canada contains two important Chinatowns: Vancouver and Toronto. Vancouver’s Chinatown is the largest in Canada. It is a popular tourist attraction and one of the largest historic Chinatowns on the continent. There are approximately 400,000 ethnic Chinese in the city, comprising 17% of the Vancouver Metropolitan Area’s population. Approximately 279,000 ethnic Chinese live in Toronto, comprising 10.8% of the total population. Toronto’s Chinatown is now one of the largest Chinatowns in North America and one of several major Chinese-Canadian communities in the Greater Toronto Area. Chinatowns in Asia The largest Chinatown in Asia is in Yokohama Japan, just south of Tokyo, which is one of the largest Chinatowns in the world. There are approximately 675,000 ethnic Chinese currently living in...
Dot Chinese Online (.在线) and Dot Chinese Website (.中文网) featured in EURid's World Report on Internationalized Domain Names 2014
The TLD Registry team is excited and flattered that our Dot Chinese Online (.在线) and Dot Chinese Website (.中文网) TLDs have been featured as the current most successful IDN new gTLDs by the European Registries for Internet Domains (EURid), in their comprehensive World Report on Internationalized Domain Names 2014. The August 2014 volume of the report is supported by the United Nations’ UNESCO, Verisign, the Council for European National Top Level Domain Registries (CENTR), the Latin American and Caribbean Association of cCTLDs (LACTLD), the Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Name Association (APTLD), and the African Top Level Domain (AfTLD). The report was created with the intention of propagating international equality within the internet’s global community. Our goal of empowering 20% of humanity to use their own great and ancient language, Chinese, in website addresses is what drives our work, and we are delighted to have been made a case study in the report. “I believe that internationalised domain names are an essential entry point for a multilingual and inclusive Internet, and that is why we have made them an integral part of our policies to protect an Internet that is open and accessible to all”, said Neelie Kroes, the Vice President of the European Commission. TLD Registry has been championing international internet equality for seven years now, as demonstrated by our two leading IDN’s, Dot Chinese Online and Dot Chinese Website, which offers native Chinese internet users the ability to use domain names in their own language. The report gives a full analysis of the nature of IDNs — why it drives multilingualism, usage, enhancement abilities, industry opinions, new IDN gTLDs, and the industry stats. A full chapter is dedicated to universal acceptance – what it means, how it is supported, and recent developments (such as Google’s implementation of IDN email addresses in Gmail). TLD Registry’s CMO Simon Cousins stated, "We're proud to see our Chinese IDNs under Dot Chinese Online (.在线) and Dot Chinese Website (.中文网) highlighted as a case study in the EurID-UNESCO report. The TLD Registry team is proud of the work we do to improve the lives of vast numbers of ordinary Chinese internet users”. The Dot Chinese Online and Dot Chinese Website case study features are mentioned in Section 8.2.5, on page 86, focusing on new IDN gTLDS. The study gives an overview of our top registrations with corresponding IDN TLDs (.在线 and .中文网). An honorable mention in Section 8.2.2, page 84 states that Dot Chinese Online (.在线) and Dot Chinese Website (.中文网) are the “IDN new gTLDs with the highest volumes of registrations to date (May 2014)” . TLD Registry is proud to represent the integration of internationalized domain names for the world’s Chinese...

In response to the positive feedback after Chinese IDNs went live from a group of young Chinese Mainland domainers, we reached out to these enthusiasts and have built friendships over a couple months. Because of this reaction, we decided to establish the Chinese Domain Ambassador Program to support these young entrepreneurs to improve their professionalism and expand their understanding of global opportunities, techaniques, and business models. At the launch of the program, the young creative entrepreneurs are assigned as Ambassadors and gain access to our reserved premium domains, direct contact with our experts, an outlet to exchange ideas and business plans, invitations to events hosted in China, as well as a certificate of participation and a flashy t-shirt! Through this program, we are able to localize ourselves in China with a grassroots approach. This innovative support program validates the commitment TLD Registry has to Chinese netizens and domainers. On August 19, TLD Registry and .CLUB Domains kick-started a 3-day series of Mid-Autumn Festival Parties in Beijing and Xiamen. Congratulations on the Birth of India’s own IDN TLD, .भारत (“.Bharat”)
On August 27, 2014, India’s .IN Registry launched its first native-language ccTLD, .भारत (.Bharat) in the national capital, New Delhi. The ccTLD is the word for “India” written in the Devanagari script, and is the matching Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) ccTLD for .IN. TLD Registry is ecstatic that this new IDN TLD is now part of the IDN community. .IN registry NIXI CEO Dr. Govind kindly invited TLD Registry to the launch party where the Minister for Communications and Information Technology, and Minister for Law and Justice, Shri. Ravi Shankar Prasad presented to the world the new Hindi IDN. Our own CMO Simon Cousins and CEO Arto Iskoski were fortunate enough to become acquainted with Dr. Govind, CEO of the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), during the events at World Domain Day 2014 in Hyderabad, India a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, due to previous travel engagements in China and India, TLD Registry was not able to participate in the function. We are sorry we missed such a wonderful opportunity to witness this milestone. NIXI, like TLD Registry, has been advocating a multilingual Internet community of universal access. In coordination with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), NIXI will be launching more IDNs in other regional languages. This is truly a tremendous step towards achieving universal accessibility in numerous respects. The release of this domain name in Devanagari script means that it will support the languages of Bodo (Boro), Dogri, Hindi, Konkani, Maithili, Marathi, Nepali, and Sindhi-Devanagari. Hindi alone, is the national language of India, with the second largest population in the world (following China), making it the fourth most spoken language in the world. This is a pretty big deal - nearly 20% of the world just gained the satisfaction of being included into the world of the Internet. Devanagari using communities are now empowered to use their native written language on the Internet, enabling them to foster a deeper understanding about other Indian people and their culture. .भारत has not only transformed the lives of the Devanagari speaking people, but has also unified the digital world with India. Before the introduction of IDNs, non-English speakers felt a lack of relevance in the digital world. But now, the feeling has transferred more closely to a lack of a digital divide. TLD Registry is celebrating that current feeling with India and its people. Congratulations .भारत and welcome! Amanda Ng, TLD...
